DESCRIPTION
An information board welcomes visitors at the entrance of the walk on Via Santa Liberata. The path to the cave is straightforward and red and white signage guides walkers down.
Upon reaching the cave, there are two openings that offer views over the Orta Valley. The 2nd opening has the most impressive views and is only 100 metres upon entering. There is no access beyond this point due to a locked gate. The openings and inspiring views over the valley illuminate the ‘dark cave’.
Grotta Scura is a limestone formation created over millions of year by the River Orta. It is an important archaeological site in Abruzzo. Relics found here are evidence that humans occupied the cave during the Neolithic era.
From 1943 to 1945, the Germans occupied this area as part of their defence of the Gustav Line in World War II. They blasted one opening to give them a better vantage point across the valley. The locals hid deep within the cave as a shelter during bombardments and to evade capture. Remnants of a small chapel remain deep within the cave however this area is not accessible without a local guide.
