Springtime in Abruzzo not only brings the last dustings of snow on the mountains but also the beginning of the hunting season. The hunt begins with locals seeking out their secret spots. An outdoor treasure hunt ensues seeking the prey – the masters of camouflage. Only someone with a keen sense of sight and intuition is equipped to find them hidden amongst the rocky outcrops and woodlands. A sixth sense that is cultivated over years of hunting. Cars are partially submerged, hidden amongst bushes, hunters zigzagging within the bushland. It’s a covert operation. The ultimate reward – the new growth of wild asparagus!
As a novice now into my 3rd season of wild asparagus hunting, I am yet to develop this sixth sense. The process involves walking amongst the woodlands, quietening down, refocusing your sight, and slowing down the breath. Tuning into the silence so you can hear it whisper the directions to hidden asparagus.
I tell myself it’s the journey that matters – a soothing consolation as my hunting yields a paltry amount of asparagus. Luckily I don’t rely on my hunting prowess for any real sustenance. Ultimately, the joy lies in the hunt and a tasty frittata!
So enjoyed reading these glimpses of Bolignano, both historic and contemporary.
Thanks Amore! Thanks for taking the time out to read them.
