This short walk takes you from Salle Castle through wild woody terrain and includes a great view of Caramanico and a refreshing stop at Orta river. This walk also intersects with A1 Salle to Caramanico (add an extra 1hr one way)
STARTNG POINT: Salle Castle in Salle Vecchia (old part of Salle)
END POINT: Orta River
TRAVEL TIME: 30 minutes one way
LENGTH: 600 metres
DIFFICULTY Italian Alpine Club rating: E – Escursionistico (Hiker – Intermediate)
RECOMMENDED TIME OF YEAR: All year round. Not recommended after heavy rains or in the hot midday summer sun.
In Spring the area is awash with wildflowers.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF WALK
This walk begins at Salle Castle within the ruins of Salle Vecchia, which is worth a visit in its own right. To find the start of the walk is a bit tricky. From the castle take a left turn downhill. About 30m downhill, just before an old farmhouse, there is a track on the left. Follow the track and the red and white walking markers. The track is rocky and overgrown. There are red and white markers however keep a lookout because paths do deviate especially on your return back to Salle Castle.

The walk is very peaceful and you may come across a range of butterflies, wildflowers in the spring. The first part of the walk is very woody and the stone ruins are what remains of the old Salle cemetery.
Another 10 mins into the descent, you start to come across a clearing with beautiful views of Caramanico, the canyon walls of River Orta and Majella mountains.

Continue following the red and white insignia until you come to the river. The vegetation in this area starts to change into a kind of rainforest. The path continues to the right following the river. Do not go into the water. This is a pristine environment that can be ruined by people. It’s also an unpredictable river with torrents and undercurrents. Beautiful spot for a picnic.

You can continue onto the A1 track to Caramanico or return to Salle Castle.
